Aims & Values

We aim to:

  • Set high staff and learner expectations and to promote and sustain an ethos of achievement, and for learners to be motivated and actively involved in their own learning and development.
  • Use tasks, activities and resources effectively in meeting the learning needs of all pupils who will acquire a solid foundation in mathematics.
  • Have high expectations from staff and learners and use praise to help learners develop confidence in using and applying mathematics to reach a high standard of numeracy.
  • Ensure the learning climate, teaching approaches and the clarity and purposefulness of dialogue between staff and learner will enable learners to enjoy the challenges and aesthetic satisfaction of mathematics and to become independent thinkers that learn to work co-operatively.
  • Appreciate that the rationale and design of the curriculum will develop mathematical programmes and day to day activities which promote and ensure equality and fairness for all learners through approaches to inclusion.
  • Ensure the provision, organisation and use of mathematical resources will be easily accessible and arrangements made to ensure health and safety, including security, for all staff and learners.

Mathematics at Denny High School

Mathematics is important in everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives. Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.

Mathematics plays an important role in areas such as science or technologies, and is vital to research and development in fields such as engineering, computing science, medicine and finance. Learning mathematics gives children and young people access to the wider curriculum and the opportunity to pursue further studies and interests. Mathematics also equips us with many of the skills required for life, learning and work and understanding the part that mathematics plays in almost all aspects of life is crucial. This reinforces the need for mathematics to play an integral part in lifelong learning and be appreciated for the richness it brings.

Because Mathematics is rich and stimulating, it engages and fascinates learners of all ages, interests, and abilities. Learning mathematics develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to think in abstract ways. It uses a universal language of numbers and symbols, which allows us to communicate ideas in a concise, unambiguous and rigorous way.

The Mathematics Courses that we offer at Denny High School, allow learners to acquire and develop the attributes and capabilities of the four capacities. For example: success in mathematical learning and activity leads to increased confidence as an individual; being able to think logically helps towards being a responsible citizen; and being able to understand, use and communicate mathematical ideas will help in becoming an effective contributor.
