Physics is the study of matter, energy and the interaction between them. This entails asking fundamental questions and trying to answer them by observing and experimenting. The answers to such questions can lead to advances in our understanding of the world around us and often result in technological improvements which enhance the lives of all. The study of physics is of benefit, not only to those intending to pursue a career in science, but also to those intending to work in areas such as the health, energy, leisure and computing industries.
In the National 5 Physics course, students will typically study a range of topics related to the physical world and the natural laws that govern it. Some of the key areas of focus in the National 5 Physics curriculum will include:
Dynamics: Students will learn about the fundamental laws of motion, including concepts such as acceleration, momentum and force. They will also study the different forms of energy, such as kinetic and potential energy, and how energy can be transferred and transformed.
Space: Students will learn about the origins of the universe by studying observations made by the likes of Galileo, Newton, and, Hubble. They will also learn about how humans are still pushing the boudaries of space through engineering and exploration.
Electricity: Students will learn about electric circuits, including how to calculate current, voltage and resistance, as well as how to use basic electronic components like resistors and capacitors.
Properties of Matter: Students will learn about how matter interacts with its surroundings when the total energy of systems change.
Waves: Students will study the nature of waves and the different types of waves, including sound waves, electromagnetic waves, and more. They will also learn about the properties of light and how it interacts with matter.
Radiation: Students will begin to study the fascinating world of the atom and how its power has been unleashed in Nuclear fission and fusion reactions.
