Maths Anxiety and Dyscalculia
Maths Anxiety
Maths Anxiety is a negative emotional reaction to mathematics. It can cause feelings of panic, worry, or helplessness when faced with a maths task, making it harder to think clearly and solve problems — even when the learner has the skills to do so.
Scottish Working Definition of Dyscalculia (2022)
Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects a person’s ability to understand and work with numbers. It involves ongoing difficulty with number sense, recalling number facts, and carrying out calculations, despite strong effort and effective teaching. Learners may find everyday numerical tasks harder than expected, but with the right support they can develop confidence and successful strategies.
